Ronaldo-less Portugal beat Mexico 2-1 for third place at Confed Cup
Portugal overcame a missed penalty and an own goal as they claimed a 2-1 comeback victory over Mexico in extra time to finish third at the Confederations Cup on Sunday.
Substitute Adrien Silva converted a 104th-minute penalty for the game-winner after defender Pepe had levelled in stoppage time for Portugal who fell behind from Luis Neto's own goal and had a first spot kick from Andre Silva saved.
Both teams ended the game at Spartak Stadium with 10 men as Portugal's Nelson Semedo was dismissed in the 106th and Mexico's Raul Jimenez six minutes later.
The European champions Portugal placed third on their Confed Cup debut although World Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo was already at home to see his newborn twins. Gold cup winners Mexico, who had won tournament in 1999, finished fourth as in 2005.
