Red Bull were given further reason to celebrate on Saturday as Daniel Ricciardo followed up Max Verstappen's shock win in Spain by claiming his maiden pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Verstappen became Formula One's youngest race winner in Catalunya last time out, but will start from the back of the grid on Sunday after crashing during Q1.

However, his team-mate produced a stunning lap of one minute and 13.622 seconds to top the timesheets ahead of Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton at a venue where grid position is crucial.

Eight of the last 10 pole-sitters at Monaco have gone on to claim victory – a trend Ricciardo will now hope to continue.

Championship leader Rosberg was 0.169secs behind the Australian in second, while Hamilton claimed third spot after initially failing to make it out of the pit lane at the start of Q3 due to a fuel pressure issue. 

Sebastian Vettel took fourth, but the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen is set to be demoted five places from sixth following the Finn's unscheduled gearbox change ahead of qualifying.

An eventful session began with a red flag when Felipe Nasr (Sauber) suffered an engine problem on his first lap, while Verstappen's error led to Q1 being brought to a halt for a second time, the teenager following up a crash in P3 with another tangle with the barriers.
