Sutton suspended by British Cycling
Shane Sutton has been suspended by British Cycling as they investigate discrimination allegations.
British Cycling technical director Shane Sutton has been suspended, pending an internal investigation into allegations of discrimination.
The body had earlier announced an independent review into their performance programmes after sexism claims.
However, allegations of discrimination led to Sutton being stood down later on Tuesday.
"Following the announcement of an independent review into British Cycling’s performance programmes, we are also announcing technical director Shane Sutton has been suspended pending an internal investigation into the allegations of discrimination that have been reported in the press," a statement read.
Sutton joined British Cycling in 2002 and was promoted to his role as technical director in April 2014.
He has also held roles at Welsh Cycling and Cycling Australia.
Earlier on Tuesday, British Cycling launched an independent review following allegations of sexism made by track rider Jess Varnish.
Varnish alleged that Sutton told the 25-year-old to "go and have a baby" after she was dropped from the Great Britain team following her failure to qualify for the Rio Olympic Games.
Varnish also claims that Sutton told her she was "too old" and "not worth wasting UK Sport's money" along with other comments dating back "many years".
