Landa and Aru ensure Astana dominate Vuelta
It was Astana's day at the Vuelta a Espana on Wednesday as Mikel Landa and Fabio Aru led the way.
Mikel Landa claimed stage 11 of the Vuelta a Espana having burst inside the final stages of the mountainous route before finishing clear of Astana team-mate Fabio Aru.
Landa went clear with nine kilometres remaining and eventually finished a minute and 21 seconds ahead of Aru - who claims the overall lead from Tom Dumoulin.
Dumoulin was almost three minutes off the pace while Ian Boswell's third-place finish proved a ray of light for Team Sky, who saw Chris Froome finish almost nine minutes down after an early crash.
There was further woe for Tinkoff-Saxo, who saw Sergio Paulinho involved in a motorbike incident days after Peter Sagan endured the same fate.
The Slovakian was forced to withdraw after being hit during Saturday's stage with the team later calling for action from the sport's authorities.
The team tweeted during Wednesday's stage: "Unbelievable! @sergiompaulinho abandons @lavuelta after being hit by reckless TV motorbike! What shall we do now? (More info to follow)."
Having moved into contention during stage 10, Froome suffered an early crash prior to Romain Sicard and Darwin Atapuma making the early strides.
However, Omar Fraile, Jerome Coppel and Nelson Oliveira joined the pair before the former claimed the maiden Collada de Baixalis climb.
The likes of Mikael Cherel, Jose Goncalves and George Bennett sought to set the pace after the peloton had become increasingly splintered as Ruben Plaza was first up the Coll d'Ordino climb.
Fraile and Ruben Plaza were edged into second and third by Imanol Erviti at the Coll de la Rabassa before Sicard returned to the front - the leaders enjoying an advantage of more than five minutes inside the final 45km.
But Froome's struggles continued as he was dropped from the peloton before requiring the medical car prior to Fraile winning the Collada de la Gallina.
Alongside Sicard, Landa, Oliveira, Pawel Poljanski and Boswell led inside the final 10km as the frontrunners again splintered.
Dumoulin dropped back while Aru and Joaquin Rodriguez both attacked, but there was no catching Landa, as he ascended the Cortals de Encamp first before crossing the line.
