Taylor century keeps New Zealand in control
Ross Taylor made a century as New Zealand closed in on victory against Pakistan in the second Test.
New Zealand remain on track for victory in the second Test against Pakistan after a Ross Taylor century on day four in Hamilton.
Taylor made an unbeaten 102 at Seddon Park on Monday as the hosts declared at 313-5, setting Pakistan 369 for victory.
Tom Latham (80) also impressed, but the Black Caps – who hold a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series – scored at a relatively comfortable rate.
Imran Khan (3-76) was the pick of the Pakistan bowlers, with the tourists finishing the day at 1-0 in their chase.
Pakistan wasted an early lbw review on Latham, who edged a Sohail Khan (0-69) delivery, as the hosts made a slow start.
It took until the fifth over for New Zealand to score, before Jeet Raval (2) was trapped in front by Mohammad Amir (1-86).
As Pakistan's pacemen kept it tight, the hosts seemed in no rush – with Kane Williamson only narrowly surviving being run out.
Sami Aslam then put down Latham off Amir before the opener brought up his 50 off the final ball before lunch, flicking to the boundary off his pads.
Imran removed Williamson (42) after the interval, the batsman edging through to Sarfraz Ahmed.
Taylor survived an lbw decision on 16 – given out to Wahab Riaz before reviewing to be saved by a front-foot no-ball, although the delivery was also missing the stumps.
But Wahab would get Latham with a bouncer before Taylor needed treatment after being struck in the hand.
New Zealand's lead was building slowly – Henry Nicholls (26) the next to go – with Taylor largely untroubled.
Colin De Grandhomme smashed 32 off 21 before departing, and Taylor brought up his 16th Test ton with a cut for four.
New Zealand declared shortly after, setting Pakistan 369 for victory and giving the tourists' openers a tricky period before stumps.
But Aslam (1) and Azhar Ali (0) survived the three overs before the close of play.
