Chadd Sayers could make his Test debut at the expense of Nathan Lyon as Australia consider picking four quicks for the day-night Test against Pakistan at the Gabba.

South Australia paceman Sayers could get his chance when the three-match series starts on a bouncy track in Brisbane on Thursday.

Pakistan's inexperience of pink-ball cricket could also sway Australia's selection, which will be confirmed on the day of the match and could include Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Jackson Bird and Sayers.

"I need to have another look at the wicket to determine how much grass is on [the pitch] and things like that." said Australia captain Steve Smith.

"Jackson will probably play. He played the last game [against South Africa in Adelaide last month] and played pretty well, so I dare say he'll be in the team."

Pakistan lost both Tests on their tour of New Zealand last month and Smith said the visitors should be braced for some hostile bowling after noting the success the Black Caps pacemen enjoyed.

The Australia skipper added: "We've watched a little bit of the New Zealand series, just recently, and I think traditionally sub-continent sides that come over to Australia don't handle the pace and bounce, or aren't as comfortable with the pace and bounce of our wickets.

"So you need to try and find ways to exploit that as much as possible, and at times I'm sure we're going to see some short pitched bowling to mess with their [footwork] and be possible ways to get them out as well.

"We watched New Zealand pretty closely and they obviously did a good job, so hopefully our bowlers can replicate that."
