Friedsam retires with ankle injury in Austria
An ankle injury stopped Anna-Lena Friedsam in her tracks, as she retired hurt from the Nurnberger Gastein Ladies while winning handsomely.
Anna-Lena Friedsam was taken from the court on a stretcher after retiring hurt at the Nurnberger Gastein Ladies on Monday.
The German was dominating her first-round match against Klara Koukalova 6-1 4-0 in Austria.
However, Friedsam turned her ankle on the clay and had to be attended to by medics before being aided from the court.
Katerina Siniakova, seeded eighth, fell in the first round after going down 6-4 6-4 to Danka Kovinic.
Rounding off the action, Carina Witthoft was leading Denisa Allertova 6-3 5-5 in their match before rain stopped play, and the pair will complete the contest on Tuesday.
