Andy Murray has set his sights on becoming world number one after what he described as the best season of his career.

The Brit made three grand-slam finals in 2016, winning Wimbledon to take his tally up to three majors.

Murray holds an incredible 55-9 win-loss record this year, but remains a distant second to Novak Djokovic in the rankings.

However, speaking at a charity event in Glasgow, the 29-year-old said he would target number one.

"It's going to be hard. I couldn't have done loads more this year," Murray said.

"There was a period in March in Indian Wells and Miami where I could have done better. But I can't complain this year.

"I've played the best season of my career, obviously I want to improve on that. My goal now is to finish this year strong.

"It's easy after the US Open and the Davis Cup to take my eye off the ball.

"I need some good rest to then finish the year strong as possible to give myself a platform to push for the top spot next year."

Murray is resting after featuring for Great Britain in their Davis Cup semi-final loss to Argentina.

He would welcome alterations to the team tournament, but is against the idea of playing at neutral venues.

"I like the idea of changing the format. Maybe shortening the weekend," Murray said.

"Personally, the last three days coming back from the US Open, being on court for 11 hours across three days was really hard. A lot of the players have spoken about that.

"Potentially playing it over Saturday and Sunday [would be good]. A lot of the top players have spoken about the scheduling over a number of years and nothing has changed. Trying something new would give the event a lift in terms of participation from the top players.

"With a neutral venue, I am not sold on that yet, I do love the home and away atmosphere that we get. It's something we as tennis players are not used to.

"The home and away aspect is what I enjoy and makes the Davis Cup special."
