Dibaba denied, Kiprop retains title
Almaz Ayana produced the standout performance on the final day of the World Championships, beating Genzebe Dibaba to 5000m gold.
Genzebe Dibaba's hopes of making history were ended by her team-mate as Almaz Ayana claimed 5000 metres gold on the final day of the World Championships in Beijing.
Ethiopia's Dibaba was seeking to become the first woman to win the 1500m and 5000m in the same championships.
However, her compatriot Ayana produced a stunning display - breaking clear with several laps to go before surging to victory in a championship-record time of 14 minutes and 26.83 seconds.
Dibaba finished more than 17 seconds behind and was ultimately beaten to silver by Senbere Teferi as Ethiopia completed a clean sweep of the podium.
Kenya's Asbel Kiprop was not to be denied glory in the men's 1500m as he timed his charge perfectly down the home straight to claim a third successive world title.
Kiprop left himself with plenty of work to do, but showed his class to take victory as the fast-finishing Elijah Motonei Manangoi pipped Abdalaati Iguider to silver, with Taoufik Makhloufi and Silas Kiplagat finishing just outside the medals.
Bohdan Bondarenko lost his high jump crown in a jump-off, with Commonwealth champion Derek Drouin of Canada improving on the bronze medal he secured two years ago in Moscow.
Bondarenko, Drouin and home favourite Guowei Zhang were given an additional opportunity to clear 2.36 metres after initially proving unable to clear the height, with Mutaz Essa Barshim and Donald Thomas eliminated due to earlier failures.
When the three medalists again dislodged the bar at 2.36, a new height of 2.34m was set and Drouin was the only man to make it over, leaving Bondarenko and Zhang to share silver.
China also had to settle for second in the women's javelin as Katharina Molitor produced the longest throw of the year, an impressive 67.69m effort, to deny Huihui Lyu with the final attempt of the competition.
A sensational third leg from Allyson Felix proved in vain for the United States as Jamaica took gold in the women's 4x400m relay, with Great Britain finishing third.
However, the USA were able to win the men's 4x400m ahead of Trinidad and Tobago, in a race that saw Britain claim another bronze as Martyn Rooney edged out Jamaica's Javon Francis - who took the lead on the back straight only to fade badly - on the line.
