Texans name Osweiler starter for Raiders playoff clash
After coming in for the concussed Tom Savage last Sunday, Brock Osweiler will start for the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round/
Brock Osweiler will start for the Houston Texans in Saturday's playoff game against the Oakland Raiders, head coach Bill O'Brien announced.
Osweiler - who was benched for Tom Savage during the Week 15 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars - came into the game in the second quarter of Sunday's loss to the Tennessee Titans after Savage exited with a concussion.
"We have a lot of confidence that he will go out and play well for us," O'Brien said of Osweiler. "He's been a pro. He's been studying like he's the starter. He hasn't changed at all. He's ready to go."
After leading the Texans to a 21-20 comeback defeat of the Jaguars, Savage got the start in a 12-10 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Savage will need to clear the NFL's concussion protocol before he can return to action.
Osweiler signed a four-year contract worth $72 million last offseason but has failed to live up to expectations.
The fifth-year quarterback has completed just 59 per cent of his passes for 2,957 yards in 15 games and his 16 interceptions are tied for fourth-most in the league. Only the New York Jets' Ryan Fitzpatrick had a lower passer rating than Osweiler's 72.2 among regular starters.
