The Red Devils have the quality and talent to lift a maiden World Cup
With the World Cup now heading to the final four, we assess the chances of the sides left in the tournament to see who can go all the way and lift the famous trophy in Moscow on Sunday the 15th of July. As ever, you can watch all the action from the World Cup via beIN SPORTS CONNECT.
Belgium can dare to dream of lifting a maiden World Cup, after a dramatic 3-2 win over Japan in the round of sixteen and a defensively composed performance to knock out five times World Champions Brazil with a 2-1 victory.
Having been widely derided before the tournament, Roberto Martinez has arguably been the most astute coach at the tournament. His decision to throw on Marouane Fellaini & Nacer Chadli against Japan paid dividends with both players scoring as the Red Devils came from behind to register a 3-2 win.
Martinez also kept faith in the duo, and the Premier league pair delivered again against the Selacao on a more defensive level. Fellaini, in particular, was a colossus in central midfield, successfully disrupting the play of Brazil, whilst being a threat at set-pieces.
Belgium’s tactical flexibility could be their secret weapon in going all the way to lift the World Cup, Martinez has now masterminded the win over Brazil and the Spanish coach will now be relishing the tactical test against France. Belgium is currently the third favourites to lift the World Cup come the 15th of July.
Key Man
Eden Hazard has been one of the best players at the tournament and stands out in a side crammed with World class talent. The attacker has been crucial to Belgium’s run to the semi-finals, providing two goals and two assists for his side. Hazard’s breakneck speed on the counter-attack was a useful asset as Belgium looked to close out the tie against Brazil, the 27-year-olds pace could be needed if Belgium takes the lead in the semi-final.
