Sharapova out of Wimbledon
Former world No.1 Maria Sharapova had been due to compete in qualifying for Wimbledon, but will no longer be able to take part.
Maria Sharapova's hopes of featuring at Wimbledon have been dashed after the Russian confirmed in a Facebook post she will miss the entire grass-court season with injury.
The former world No.1 from Russia had been due to compete in qualifying at the All England Club, having failed to secure a place at the French Open after her return from a 15-month long doping suspension. Sharapova was injured while playing on clay at the WTA event in Rome, and she confirmed her recovery would take longer than was initially expected. She had been slated to play in Birmingham at the Aegon Classic, a lead-up grass-court event heading into Wimbledon which signed her up for two years, but she will also now miss that competition. "After an additional scan, the muscle tear that I sustained in Rome will unfortunately not allow me to compete in the grass court tournaments I was scheduled to play," she wrote on her Facebook page. "I want to thank the LTA [Lawn Tennis Association] for their amazing support on my return and providing me with a Birmingham wild card, a tournament which I hope many of you will be able to attend. "I look forward to meeting you there next year. I will continue to work on my recovery and my next scheduled tournament is in Stanford." Sharapova was banned after testing positive for meldonium, a heart disease medecine, at the Australian Open last year, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport found she was not an "intentional doper".
