Gombos sets up Kyrgios quarter
Open 13 qualifier Norbert Gombos reached his maiden ATP quarter-final thanks to a hard-fought victory over Nicolas Mahut on Friday (AEDT).
Slovakian Gombos triumphed 7-5 3-6 7-6 (7-5) over the world number 54, setting up a last-eight clash with defending champion Nick Kyrgios.
Gombos squandered a match point when serving at 5-4 in the third set, but recovered to clinch victory in the tie-break.
Top seed Gael Monfils breezed through his second-round match, beating Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-1 6-4.
Monfils faces compatriot Richard Gasquet next.
Stakhovsky was not the only Ukrainian to be sent packing on Thursday, with Illya Marchenko also beaten 6-3 6-3 by second seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
In the day's remaining second-round match, Daniil Medvedev defeated Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3 3-6 7-6 (6-3) and will meet Lucas Pouille in the quarter-finals.
