Hogg double helps Scotland trounce Georgia
Georgia's case for a place in the northern hemisphere's annual Six Nations was weakened as it was well beaten in Kilmarnock.
Scotland 43-16 Georgia
Stuart Hogg scored two eye-catching tries as Scotland rounded off 2016 with an emphatic 43-16 victory over Georgia at Kilmarnock's Rugby Park.
Georgia is keen to be included in an expanded version of the Six Nations, but there was something of a gulf in class between the Eastern European nation and its host on Sunday (AEDT).
Scotland ran in four tries prior to the interval to seize command of proceedings — a solo effort from Hogg the pick of the bunch — and crossed again through Hamish Watson early in the second half.
To its credit, Georgia dug in thereafter to ensure the scoreline remained respectable, but Vern Cotter's men fittingly had the final say as Hogg finished a scintillating breakaway move.
The only previous meeting between the teams, at the 2011 Rugby World Cup, proved a dour affair, with Scotland scoring five penalties to Georgia's two.
Yet the tone for a much more entertaining contest was set inside five minutes as scrum-half Vasil Lobzhanidze sneaked around the blindside to give Georgia a shock lead.
Scotland responded strongly, Tommy Seymour winning the race to dot down a chip from Hogg before Kote Mikautadze's cynical collapsing of a maul resulted in a yellow card and a penalty try.
Sean Maitland was the next to go over amid heavy home pressure and Hogg then collected his own kick over the top, with the aid of a fortuitous bounce, to race over for the standout score of the game.
When Watson powered over from a rehearsed lineout move, Georgia appeared in danger of being humiliated, but Lobzhanidze reduced their deficit and Scotland had to wait until the 77th minute to score again, debutant Ali Price and Rory Hughes combining to set Hogg clear.
