Newcastle back on top after Wigan win
Newcastle United produced a hard-fought 2-0 win over a stubborn Wigan side to reclaim top spot in the EFL Championship.
Goals to Mo Diame and second half substitute Christian Atsu lifted Newcastle United back to the top of the Championship, with a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic.
The Magpies had lost top spot to Brighton, which beat Blackburn 3-2 on Wednesday (AEDT).
Against his former club, Senegal international Diame set about getting it back, his powerful run midway through the first half leading to a one-two with Isaac Hayden at the edge of the Latics' area. Diame finished the move he started to give his side the lead.
With Wigan increasingly dominating the match as it searched for an equaliser, Newcastle goal-keeper Karl Darlow took matter into his own hands, his second half clearance finding Yoann Gouffran.
The french international teed up substitute Atsu, whose powerful shot ensured the result.
