Marseille wins despite wasteful Payet
Dimitri Payet wasted a number of opportunities to score for Marseille, but it still ran out a 2-0 winner over Rennes.
Former West Ham United star Dimitri Payet hit the bar and missed the target on two other occasions as he failed to net in Marseille's 2-0 win over Rennes in Ligue 1.
Marseille was without the services of top scorer Bafetimbi Gomis, who injured his knee last week and is expected to miss six weeks, and Payet was unable to fill his boots despite being given a number of good chances.
Luckily for Marseille, which in continuing its bid for a top-four finish and a place in the UEFA Europa League, wingers Clinton N'Jie and Florian Thauvin did hit the target with second-half goals as Marseille moved level on points with fifth-place Saint-Etienne and one point behind fourth-place Lyon, both of whom play on Monday (AEDT).
While Payet missed chances, he was involved in N'Jie's goal.
Thauvin then struck a powerful swerving shot that rifled into the top corner from 25 yards after running onto a neat back heel from midfielder Morgan Sanson to seal the result.
Marseille next faces Paris Saint-Germain in a must-win game.
"PSG will be favorite but we'll give everything," Marseille left back Patrice Evra said. "We're confident when we play at the Velodrome, but I'd like to us to do the same away from home."
