The salty celebration sweeping football
Forget the dab, football has a new goal celebration that is adding flavour to even the most spectacular strikes.
Is there a more fitting way to pimp up the peppering of a goal mouth with a spectacular strike than by sprinkling a little salt on your celebration?
That may be the view of the increasing number of footballers channeling Turkish chef Nusret 'Salt Bae' Gokce, who's flamboyant application of the popular mineral seasoning has taken the internet by storm.
This post of Salt Bae absolutely bossing a delicious-looking steak has 9 million views and counting on Instagram:
'Bae saves the best bit until last, cocking his arm and sprinkling salt over the cut like an artist applying the finishing flourishes to his masterpiece.
Now, the extravagant manoeuvre is capturing the imagination of footballers across Europe, starting with an epic team celebration from Bayer Leverkusen's players in their match against Hertha Berlin on 23 January.
Arsenal striker Danny Wellbeck was next to pay homage to the Hirsuite Turkish restauranteur, with a celebration worthy of the goal that preceded it during his team's crushing 5-0 FA Cup win over Southampton.
In something of a testament to the chef's burgeoning popularity across the continent, Celtic young gun Patrick Roberts was next to get salty, with this subtle nod to the wagyu-whisperer during his sides 4-0 Scottish Premiership win over Hearts.
Dutch flyer Eljero Elia is the latest player to 'season' a goal he helped assist with the 'Salt Bae', employing a team-mate to grind some pepper on the moment, before locking his forearm into the familiar pose and sprinkling away.
A cursory glance at Bae's Instagram page reveals his strong links to the football community, posing alongside some of the biggest names in the game, including Manuel Neuer, Mesut Ozil, Fabio Capello and Lucas Podolski.
If the likes of Welbeck, Roberts and Leverkusen are a guide, football fans will be seeing a lot more of the 'Salt Bae' in the coming weeks.
