Chicharito tips MLS to become of the best leagues in the world
Though negotiations to bring him to the league have thus far been fruitless, Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez sees Major League Soccer growing into one of the world's best competitions.
The star Mexico forward has been the subject of interest from MLS, thanks in part to his star power and popularity not only in Mexico but also in the United States. Chicharito reportedly was in negotiations with Orlando City in the summer before leaving Manchester United for Bayer Leverkusen instead of returning to North America.
But the 27 year-old is confident MLS will be able to achieve its goal of becoming a top league.
"I think in the future, it's going to be one of the best leagues in the world, definitely," the forward told Bayer's official site. "The country, the people, the culture, the sports, they have everything to achieve that, so you can see a lot of big names go to the MLS to try to play there, not only to retire there, just to enjoy football and to live another type of experience about football.
"Then, the future is going to say if they can achieve that (goal), but I think they have very good possibilities to get there."
That same popularity that makes him an intriguing option for MLS, plus a remarkable season with Bayer Leverkusen, has helped Bayer and the Bundesliga expand their reach into the American market this season.
Chicharito has scored 17 goals in 27 Bundesliga appearances to help Bayer clinch third place and a return to the UEFA Champions League. He also added five in the Champions League and four in the German cup. With such a large haul, the forward had difficulty pinpointing a single memory that stood out.
"I have a lot. I have a lot because really all of the moments here have been very good, very positive, so I enjoy it a lot," Hernandez said. "I think definitely my first goal and last Saturday, when we (reached) our objective that we planted before the season, that they planted even before I came because I came here in September.
"That objective, to qualify in the Champions League and to be the third-best team in Germany — some days it seemed that it was so far and some days it seemed so close, but you can see now that we are the third-best team in Germany and I think these are the two best moments for me."
Hernandez, a fixture for the Mexican national team, was named to El Tri's 40-man preliminary roster for the Copa America Centenario earlier this week.
