Atletico Nacional fans in moving 'Chape' tribute
Atletico Nacional fans have flocked to Estadio Atanasio Girardot in Medellin to pay emotional tribute to their fallen Brazilian opponents from Chapecoense.
On the very night Atletico Nacional was due to play Brazilian club Chapocoense in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final, fans of the Colombian team packed Estadio Atanasio Girardot in Medellin to pay emotional tribute to their Brazilian opponents, many of whom lost their lives in a tragic plane crash on Tuesday (AEDT).
Atletico, which has called on CONMEBOL to award the title to Chapecoense, broadcast footage of the event on its Facebook page, a sample of which can be seen here:
The club accompanied the vision with this statement: "Today we give them a farewell, beyond the echo of the final whistle. Today we give them a farewell, in addition to the echo of the end of a game."
Chape fans also flocked to their club's home ground for a similar outpouring of emotion towards their fallen heroes:
The flight, carrying members of the first team and a number of journalists, came down in Cerro Gordo, Colombia killing 71 of the 77 people on board.
Chapecoense was in Colombia to face Atletico Nacional in the first leg of the second-tier continental final.
